What’s Right In Front Us Often Reveals Next Steps

Six years ago can seem like yesterday or twelve long years depending on what has occurred in the interim. The lessons or reminders of that time are certainly a part of who we are today and yet in seeing something from the past today we are often tempted to add judgments about what we did or didn’t or could have done differently. What we have in front of us is all that we can respond to … in ways unique to who we are, our current situation, and what gives us joy even in the midst of challenging transitions.

Todays image was taken six years ago, a few months after my mother died. The sea as always is a place of blessing for me and its gifts nourish in myriad ways. And you?

Your reflection was particularly pertinent for me as it is one year ago today that my mother died. I look at the photo of her on my desk and am flooded w/ memories. Today the memory that will be most prominent is the call I got from my sister at 9:30am, telling me that, “She is gone.” But that is not where I am living, in memories. It’s so true that how what has been propels us forward is what truly matters.

When my father was in his final days and I was spending a lot of time at his side, I was often driving through the countryside to get to him or to get back home during the middle of the night. It was Christmastime and there were two side-by-side houses that had their window candles on all night. I experienced great comfort coming around a bend in the road and seeing those candles like beacons of hope and encouragement. The sight sparked feelings of gratitude for all the wonderful years I had with my dad and for the deep faith in a Divine plan for our lives instilled by both of my parents.

I love the photo — interesting and peaceful at the same time. And your message is such a true one, as usual.
